Do you check my credit score when I apply for a loan?
When you complete an application for a OneMain personal loan, there are a number of things we check when making a decision. As part of the application process. You will need to provide your name, address, Social Security number, income, and other information.
We also review your credit history, which includes an in-depth credit report and score. The information in your credit report shows how you've used credit over the years. It includes:
Your credit history creates a credit score that is a number, usually between 300 and 850. It's designed to reflect the information in your credit report and provide a snapshot of how you've handled credit. This information is used in determining whether you qualify for a loan and in determining your fixed rate.
How does OneMain checking my credit report affect my credit score?
There are two types of credit inquiries-a soft inquiry and a hard inquiry. When you apply for a personal loan from OneMain Financial, our request is a hard inquiry.
- Do not have a negative effect on your credit report or credit score
- Can be for promotional reasons, like pre-approved credit card offers
- Can be for informational reasons, like when an employer requests your report as part of the hiring process
- Credit score drops a few points with each inquiry, but usually doesn't have a big impact on ability to get credit
- Occur when you apply for a loan or other type of credit and the lender requests a copy of your credit report
