March 12: Chicago St. Patrick's Day Celebration

By Logan Frederick, March 08, 2016

On March 12th, for the second year in a row, Springleaf* will help Chicago paint the town green for St. Patrick’s Day. As the primary sponsor of the iconic dyeing of the Chicago River, Springleaf team members, along with a few lucky customers, will get to ride along the boat that will tint the river green.

The tradition of dyeing the river began in 1962, after the Chicago Journeymen Plumbers discovered that the orange dye they used to identify polluted water would turn the river bright green. The plumbers were inspired to suggest that the city start dyeing the river on St. Patrick’s Day in celebration of Irish heritage, and it was history from there.

Today, the city’s Journeymen Plumbers are still responsible for dyeing the river. They will be riding along the river by boat, pouring 25 pounds of orange dye into the water. The boat’s motor will stir the dye into the water and spectators will get to witness the magical change from orange to green.

The dyeing of the river is just the kickoff to a day of green-themed festivities. The fun will continue with the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, where Springleaf will showcase their very own parade float. More than 90 Springleaf team members will be posted at stations throughout the parade, handing out giveaways and helping spectators learn more about Springleaf’s personal loans.

Xavier Melendez, a Chicagoland District Manager, is a veteran attendee. He’s looking forward to joining everyone for the big day. Coming together for a celebration like this “makes us [Springleaf] part of the community,” and helps build relationships with new faces.

Overall, the Springleaf team is excited to be part of the Windy City’s historic event and celebrate with customers. Sláinte!*
