November 4: Light The Night Walk in Oklahoma City, OK

By Matt Diehl, November 01, 2016

Commemorating lives touched by cancer, Light The Night Walk supports the fight against blood cancers and celebrates fundraising success. Founded by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), Light The Night Walk events are held in nearly 200 communities across North America each year and offer a combination of music, entertainment and camaraderie. The name of the event derives from the illuminated lanterns carried by the walkers. Each lantern has a designated color to represent how cancer has affected that person's life: white represents survivors and the power of research; red represents current patients and finding cures; and yellow represents those lost to cancer.

Walkers can participate individually or create a team of family, friends and co-workers. For those wishing to raise money, a personal fundraising account can be created to collect donations. All Light The Night Walk proceeds help fund cancer research, treatments for patients, outreach programs and more. In 2015 alone, over $100 million in donations went towards research and co-pay assistance.

For the second year in a row, OneMain will be a corporate sponsor of Oklahoma City’s Light the Night Walk and represented by several area branches. Participating branches include: Oklahoma City, Edmond, Shawnee, Norman and Del City. In addition to engaging the community and handing out giveaways, the branches are fundraising for the LLS*.

Mary Beatty, Branch Manager of the OKC branch and OneMain employee of nine years, is one of the volunteers in charge of on-site operations: “My personal responsibility is to help raise as much money as possible and raise awareness for Leukemia and Lymphoma. Light The Night is special because it raises money for current patients and research to find a cure.”

Beatty also looks forward to sharing the experience with people close to her: “We get to raise awareness, raise money, have fun as a team and invite our family and friends. I’m looking forward to the whole event. It’s very family friendly.”
