April 21-24: Vidalia Onion Festival in Vidalia, GA

By Matt Diehl, April 18, 2016

On Thursday, April 21st, the city of Vidalia, Georgia will kick off its 39th Annual Vidalia Onion Festival. Held to celebrate its treasured Vidalia onion, the event features pageants, parades, concerts and a variety of delicious food. The festival is adored by locals and food lovers from across the country and was named one of “Five Don’t-Miss Festivals Across the U.S.” by MSNBC1.

The Vidalia Onion is unique to Southeast Georgia and known for its distinctively sweet taste. In true Southern fashion, the community of Vidalia comes together every spring to host the four-day event and show off their Southern hospitality. The planning committee always makes sure they have something for everyone and this year is no exception. You can run a 5k/10k, skydive, enter a cook-off, view an arts and crafts show, ride coasters at a mobile carnival and see a Big & Rich concert all in the same day.

As a longtime supporter of community events, Springleaf Financial has been a proud sponsor of the Vidalia Onion Festival since 2005. Rita Bennett is the Branch Manager of the Vidalia Springleaf branch and recently celebrated 21 years with the company. She is also a major contributor to our sponsorship duties and looks forward to Springleaf’s 11th year as a sponsor: “In the past, we supported with donations and participated in the Vidalia Onion Run. Since 2014, we have hosted a tent and held drawings and giveaways. The best giveaway that we have, in my opinion, are our ‘onion fans.’  It is an onion shaped fan with our Springleaf information on it.  It is a big hit. It makes a great souvenir and you can use it to cool off, too!”

When asked what she is most excited about, Bennett said it was the chance to interact with the community: “I really enjoy being out among the people.  We run into some of our customers and locals but we meet people from out of town and out of state as well.”

In true Southern spirit, the entire community comes together to organize and carry out the festival each year. “Just as an onion has its layers, so does this small town,” Bennett said. “When you pull back the layers you find an army of people that are involved in the planning and execution of the festival. I am proud to be a part of this community and the Vidalia Onion Festival.”
