Elliott Sadler and the No. 1 OneMain Financial team endured a roller-coaster day in Saturday’s Pocono Green 250 at Pocono Raceway to claim a stout sixth-place finish. The team’s consistent efforts continue to pay dividends as Sadler maintains the NASCAR Xfinity Series point lead on the strength of 12 consecutive top-10 finishes.
Sadler fired off in seventh position and wasted little time climbing to sixth in the opening 10 laps of the race. Early on, he radioed crew chief Kevin Meendering and diagnosed various handling issues in each of Pocono’s three corners. As the field stretched out under green-flag conditions in the opening 25 laps, Sadler picked off a handful of spots. He climbed to fourth for the conclusion of Stage One.
Under the stage-ending caution, Sadler brought the OneMain Financial entry to the attention of the crew for four tires, fuel and a slight air pressure tweak. He returned to the track and lined up for the Stage Two restart in third place. After a short run another caution slowed the field, with Sadler occupying the runner-up position. But following a restart on lap 35, which pinned the OneMain Financial Chevrolet to the bottom line, he dropped to 10th, commenting the sticker tires put on under the last stop made the car too free in traffic. He gained two spots in the closing laps of Stage Two to claim the eighth position.
The stage-concluding caution proved fortuitous for the No. 1 team as an oil-tank bracket had come loose under the car, which had the potential to become problematic for the team if left unchecked. The crew went to work on a fix during the caution period, utilizing multiple pit stops to properly repair the issue. As a result, Sadler took the ensuing restart in 29th.
Sadler went to work through the final stage, showcasing the strength of the No. 1 machine and methodically climbed back up the leaderboard. He found a spot inside the top 10 by the 70th circuit and continued to slice his way through the field, securing sixth by the time the checkered flag flew.
Kyle Busch won the race and was followed to the line by Chase Elliott, Daniel Hemric, Austin Cindric and Cole Custer.
Elliott Sadler, driver No. 1 OneMain Financial team:
“My guys did a great job today. We had to battle back through all that traffic and got ourselves a sixth-place finish. We wanted a top five [and] we got close. We had some good battles out there. I’m very proud of everyone on this OneMain Financial Chevy team. That’s what being a team is all about. You have to sometimes go through adversity, and we felt like the past two weeks we’ve done that through the race and got ourselves some good top-five finishes.”
