Elliott Sadler and the OneMain Financial team finished 14th in the Johnsonville 180 Sunday afternoon at Road America. After earning 31 points in the Wisconsin road-course event and claiming a third-place finish at the end of Stage Two, Sadler remains the NASCAR Xfinity Series point standings leader.
The No. 1 OneMain Financial team began the 45-lap event in third place, the Chevrolet’s owner points position, after qualifying was cancelled due to inclement weather. On lap 4, the Virginia native began providing feedback to his team, relaying that his Camaro was tight in the carousel and that he was experiencing brake issues. When the first caution of the day was displayed on lap 6, OneMain Financial crew chief Kevin Meendering called Sadler down pit road for fresh tires, fuel and adjustments—performing an opposite strategy of the field. Following the restart, the No. 1 driver gained 11 positions in three laps, finishing Stage One in 13th place.
Electing to pit before the stage end, the OneMain Financial Chevrolet stayed out under the stage-ending caution. When Stage Two began, Sadler restarted second. Within the first lap of the stage, the veteran driver took over the lead. Sadler led the field for four laps before the yellow flag was displayed. On the restart, the No. 1 Chevrolet fell to second. Sadler lost two additional positions before regaining them when he avoided an incident, with the help of his spotter, just in front of him. When the second stage ended on lap 20, Sadler was in third place.
In order to save tires, the OneMain Financial team stayed out and began the final stage of the race in third. Sadler was in eighth place when Meendering called him to pit road under green for the team’s final pit stop of the day. The No. 1 team took four tires, fuel and made another adjustment to their Chevrolet. With 10 laps remaining in the 182.16-mile event, Sadler remained quiet over the radio as he completed passes after falling to 26th during the green-flag pit stop. When the checkered flag waved concluding the race, the OneMain Financial driver had driven up to the 14th position.
Jeremy Clements won the NXS event followed by JR Motorsports driver Michael Annett, Matt Tifft, Justin Marks and Brendan Gaughan to round out the top five.
Elliott Sadler, driver No. 1 OneMain Financial Chevrolet:
“It was a tough day for my OneMain Financial team today. Kevin (Meendering, crew chief) made some great strategy calls, putting us in the top three for Stage Two, but we just didn’t get the finish we wanted. Darlington is up next and we’re looking forward to that.”
