Congrats to the 2018 Community College Financial Empowerment Winner!

One of the challenges that college students can face is making ends meet. This added worry of personal finances can affect performance and attendance in the classroom. While most schools offer assistance, others go above and beyond to help their students succeed.

To honor these schools, OneMain Financial teamed up with Achieving the Dream to create the Community College Financial Empowerment Award. This award recognizes one college that shows exceptional commitment to providing students with financial support programs. The winner of this year’s award is Davidson County Community College in Thomasville, NC!

75% of DCCC’s students receive some type of federal, state or local financial aid. Some of the students use it solely for college-related expenses, but some also need it to cover living expenses. Administrators at the school identified that financial worries were taking a toll on their students and they needed to create a solution.

Actually, they created three. Each program focuses on a different stage of a student’s career — from entering or reentering college to completing an academic program to planning for life after college. Faculty members and counselors offer support on campus and students can access online materials as well.

The award includes a $25,000 grant from OneMain Financial. Achieving the Dream will also share the blueprint of their programs with the other 220 community colleges in their network. By sharing the programs, other schools can apply the same procedures to help their students thrive.

Congrats again to Davidson County Community College!
