May 7: Kentucky Derby Day & Hat Contest at Emerald Downs in Auburn, WA

By Matt Diehl • May 03, 2016

Located 25 miles south of Seattle in Auburn, WA, Emerald Downs is one of the most prominent horse tracks in the country. On Saturday, May 7th, it will be hosting its annual Kentucky Derby Day & Hat Contest to commemorate the 142nd running of the Kentucky Derby. Guests will be treated to special events and festivities similar to the official Derby in Louisville, KY.

Doors open early at 7:00 a.m. PST to coordinate agendas with the Eastern time zone. All guests who arrive in a festive Derby hat will be granted free entry and invited to enter the Hat Contest later that day. Live racing at Emerald Downs begins at 1:00 p.m. PST, with the scheduled post time for the Derby at 3:34 p.m. PST. Children will have access to several family fun events, including pony rides, while adults can enjoy a traditional mint julep. The mint julep has been the honorary beverage of the Kentucky Derby for nearly a century and is a great authenticator to the Emerald Downs experience.

Springleaf* is an event sponsor for the first time this year and we are excited to be part of the action. Tim McCabe, Branch Manager of the Auburn office and 11-year employee of Springleaf, will be leading our on-site sponsorship duties. He will be assisted by the nearby Kent and Federal Way branches as well.

“We will be the named sponsor of one of the live races at Emerald Downs during Kentucky Derby Day,” McCabe said. “Additionally, we will be giving away 500 horse head key chains branded by Springleaf and a camping chair to one lucky visitor.”

As an avid horseracing fan, McCabe looks forward to the ambiance of this special occasion: “Horse racing is the sport of kings and the Kentucky Derby is its marquee event. The atmosphere at Emerald Downs during the Kentucky Derby is electric with large crowds of every walk of life cheering on their favorite [horse] as it runs for the roses.”

McCabe is also eager to witness the action with customers: “Watching live horse racing is a thrill for all the senses,” he said. “The sounds, smells and sights heighten the excitement for me and I am very excited to share this experience with our SLFS [Springleaf] customers!”
