7 Budget-Friendly Ways to Enjoy the Beach

By Matt Diehl • July 28, 2016

The dog days of summer are here - it’s time to hit the beach!

Beaches are perfect for enjoying hot weather and relaxing with family and friends. They are also a cost-effective way to spend all day having fun without having to spend a lot of money.

If you have plans to head to the shore but need a few ideas to plan out your day, here are 7 budget-friendly ways to enjoy the beach:

1. Go hiking

Many beaches offer trails or sand dunes in close proximity to the water. If you’re feeling active and adventurous, going for a hike is a great way to experience nature and get some exercise. If you work up a sweat, it will feel great to run into the water when you get back to the beach.

2. Hunt for shells or rocks

Oceans and lakes offer a variety of natural treasures to find. Seashells, rocks and driftwood can be very exciting to discover and could be used to create jewelry or artwork. Make a game of it to see who can find the most unique rocks or spend an hour or two aimlessly wandering the beach - there’s no wrong way to do it.

3. Get your game on

The beach is an excellent place to play games with your family, friends or perfect strangers. Some beaches even provide the game gear for you. Here are some popular, inexpensive beach games to play:

  • Volleyball
  • Bocce ball
  • Frisbee
  • Catch (various items)
  • Cornhole
  • Limbo

4. Have a picnic

Some beaches have food vendors and visitor centers with food courts but the items are often overpriced. In addition to being pricey, they might not sell what you want to eat and drink. A good remedy for both of those problems would be to pack your own food and have a picnic. If you need some inspiration, consider these items:

  • Sandwiches
  • Chips
  • Cheeses
  • Fresh fruit
  • Vegetables
  • Water
  • Juice
  • Limbo

5. Be artistic

Do you enjoy drawing, painting or photography? Beaches have long been a subject of beautiful artwork and could inspire you to create your own. If you consider yourself more of a wordsmith, lose yourself in the crashing waves and whispering winds as you write some poetry or other creative content of your choice.

6. Witness a sunrise or sunset

Watching a sunset or sunrise at a beach can be a breathtaking event. Staying late into the evening could be more convenient than arriving before dawn but it may be worth your while to get up extra early. Whatever you choose, be sure to capture the moment with a camera or take video for posterity. It could end up being an experience of a lifetime.

7. Build a bonfire

The best way to complement a magical beach sunset is to build a bonfire. Before you light the match, make sure the beach allows fires and that you are in the correct designated area. If so, gather your friends, play music, dance, grill out, cook s’mores and enjoy each other’s company. Just make sure to be safe and keep a watchful eye on the fire.

No shirt, no shoes, no worries

Whether at an ocean or a small town lake, a day at the beach is a great way to pass the time. Hopefully this list provides you with some budget-friendly ideas to make your day a little more fun and carefree.
