7 Low-Cost and Fun Date Ideas for Fall

By Matt Diehl • October 13, 2016

Fall can be one of the most spectacular seasons of the year. Its natural beauty coupled with crisp, autumn air sets the stage for various activities to enjoy with your special someone.

From walks in the park to movie marathons on the couch, this time of year has something for every couple. Here are seven low-cost and fun date ideas for fall:

1. Afternoon at the park

Whether you live in a small town or a big city, most people live in proximity to a public park. An afternoon in the park could offer great one-on-one time and the fresh air and foliage can be a delight for anyone. If you need a few recommendations for what to bring, here are some items that could complement your experience:

  • Blanket
  • Books
  • Light snacks
  • Beverages
  • Music player (smartphone could be sufficient)

2. Movie marathon

Nothing says “a night in” like a comfortable couch, fresh popcorn and a movie marathon. The theme can be up for debate (actor, film series, etc.) but fall is the perfect time for a scary movie marathon. Many television channels air Halloween marathons in October and you might also find a set of scary movies available to rent or on-demand.

To make it even more fun, buy pumpkins and carve them as you watch your flicks. If you two have any favorite fall treats, stock up on those to snack on throughout the night. In the end, it should be a relaxing, entertaining night at home with your special someone.

3. Outdoor workout

Is staying fit something you have in common as a couple? If so, then fall is a great time of year to get outside and burn some calories together.

In addition to benefiting your physical fitness, studies show that couples who exercise together, stay together longer as well. Add in a scenic workout location and you have all the elements for a happy, healthy date.

Here are some fun and fit date ideas:

4. Pumpkin patch

Pumpkin patches are a popular destination in the fall. Some pumpkin patches do cost more than others so be sure to research locations with free parking and other desirable amenities. Once you find a patch you like, you can look into special events occurring on the day you plan to attend.

Here are some general pumpkin patch attractions for you to consider:

  • Hay ride
  • Corn maze
  • Animal viewing
  • Animal rides
  • Animal races
  • Petting zoo
  • Building tours

5. Chili cook-off with friends

Group dates can be a lot of fun, especially when a little friendly competition is involved. To plan a chili cook-off, set a date 2-3 weeks in advance to give participants time to perfect their personal recipes. If you are hosting the event, ask each couple to bring a side dish to balance the menu and complement the chili.

When it’s time to compete, place each chili in identical pots and label them with numbers. Once everyone has tasted each chili, go around the room and take a tally of each person’s favorite. There may only be one winner of the contest but everyone will savor a night of fun, friendship and delicious chili.

6. Romantic bonfire

A romantic rendezvous by the bonfire is a great way to enjoy each other’s company and the brisk evening air of the season. Whether you have a firepit in your backyard or choose a nearby park or beach, the time you share together should certainly be memorable.

If you are the one planning the date, try to have these items ready ahead of time:

  • Wood and lighter
  • Two blankets
  • Fresh fruit and chocolate
  • Beverages
  • Glasses
  • Music player (smartphone could be sufficient)

7. Volunteer

One potential way to get closer as a couple is to serve the community together. From raking leaves for the elderly to volunteering at a soup kitchen, fall offers a variety of ways to give back. To find volunteer opportunities and nonprofits in your area, please visit
