7 Ways to Make Extra Money During the Holidays

By Matt Diehl • December 05, 2017

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and for some people, additional income could make things a little cozier.

Here are seven ways to make extra money during the holiday season:

1. Clean out your closet

The holiday season can be a great time to sell unwanted items. As you pack away your summer clothes and accessories, try making three piles: keep, sell and donate. After you get your winter items out from storage, do the same. To increase your payout, consider selling additional items such as old jewelry, handbags and electronics.

2. Babysit

This year-round money-maker could come in extra handy during the holidays. Seasonal events like office parties and holiday dinners could open up some opportunities.

3. Provide pet care

The end of December is one of the busiest long-distance travel periods of the year.1 For some pet owners, this could create a need for long-term pet care. If you love animals, try to book some pet-sitting, dog-walking and pet-boarding jobs. You could make some money and a new furry friend at the same time.

4. Offer snow removal

If you live in a snow-prone area, imagine each snowflake as a little dollar sign. In order to make a quick pitch to potential customers, consider charging a flat rate for each job: $10 for sidewalks, $20-$40 for driveways, etc. A professional approach could help you close the sale faster and build a list of repeat customers.

5. Cook for parties

Does your family beg for your turkey & stuffing or peppermint bark each year? If so, you can turn this talent into cash. Start by asking friends if they need food for office or in-home holiday parties. If you want to expand your reach, advertise your services on social media.

6. Deliver packages

Holiday shoppers are expected to spend more money online than in stores this season.2 That means retailers and delivery companies might need additional help getting packages to customers on time. If you enjoy this type of detailed, fast-paced work, search online for local delivery opportunities.

7. Join a driving service

Rideshare driving can offer several perks like being your own boss and making your own schedule. The more you drive, the more money you can potentially make. There are certain requirements for these positions, so make sure you’re eligible before signing up.

Don’t let New Year’s stop you

The holidays can be a great opportunity to make extra money, but the magic doesn’t have to end. Take your new mindset into next year and make a goal to pay down debt, increase your savings or build an emergency fund. Consider it a gift to yourself!
