Reach out

An old buddy from high school. Your favorite aunt. The family friend who moved out of town. Think about the people in your life you haven’t seen or spoken to in a while, and set aside a few minutes to sit down and reconnect with them. Technology has made it easy to reach out to those who mean the most to us. Why not arrange a virtual get-together with family and friends and plan a game night? Or send a heartfelt email to someone just to let them know you’re thinking about them? These simple acts are a sure way to brighten your day and someone else’s, too!

Venture out

It’s easy to get stuck in the monotony of day-to-day indoor routines. Look for daily opportunities to beat cabin fever by getting out of the house and breathing in a bit of fresh air. An Iowa State University study revealed that a simple 12-minute walk can greatly improve stress levels.2 So, lace up those comfy shoes and take a stroll.

Rock out

Studies have shown a connection between music, dance and our emotional well-being.3 So after a long day, turn up the volume on your favorite music and dance like no one’s watching (even if they are). Or make it a family affair and do a fun TikTok video! Not only does it help us emotionally, dancing increases our heart rate and blood flow, which improves our cardiovascular health.4

Work out

Exercise reduces anxiety and stress, and improves self-esteem, energy and mental alertness, according to an article published by the National Institutes of Health.5 If you’re already enjoying a regular workout routine, consider adding new exercises to your regimen or maybe taking your workouts to the backyard for a change of scenery. The key is to stay moving, stay motivated and stay mindful.

Tired of the same dinner staples you’ve been making week after week? Treat yourself from time to time to carry-out from your favorite local restaurant — and add dessert! Doing this too often can be pricey, so make sure you plan ahead budget-wise for the days you can reasonably splurge. On other days, try adding a few new recipes to your dinner menu and experiment with unique dishes and drinks to keep things interesting.

Enjoying a few of these pick-me-ups can go a long way toward lifting our moods — but only if we truly appreciate them. As you’re taking that brisk walk or talking to that old friend, be mindful of the experience as it’s happening. Instead of going through the motions and moving on to the next obligation, take time to fully appreciate the things you’re doing to bring yourself a bit of happiness.

Being stuck in the house for long periods of time can bring on a roller coaster of emotions. But finding inexpensive ways to bring more happiness and less stress to our lives can give us just the boost we need to stay positive and productive.
